Swamp Witch at Home
“Swamp Witch at Home” is part of a larger, ongoing series called “Women+’s Spaces”, which celebrates the invisible skilled labour women (and people who were socialized to behave as women) put into creating and maintaining a beautiful, functional home.
Women have always been silently expected to perform the labour of making a lovely home for their families and themselves; they are judged by society when they choose not to or are unable to live up to this unspoken expectation. (“Did you see how so-and-so keeps her house?!”)
Yet I have noticed that they are also villainized, called “shallow” and “vapid” and “anti-feminist”, when they DO choose to perform this labour as well; especially if they enjoy it. It’s a double standard that I spend a lot of time thinking about as a woman who loves homes and decorating.
For nonbinary individuals, such as the titular Swamp Witch in this painting, this gendered expectation takes on an even more insidious voice, as the demand for gendered labour they may even enjoy butts up against their lived perception and identity. This Witch has chosen peace over performance, and has filled their house with plants, trinkets, and items which fill them with peace and magic. Their home exists for them and no one else.
