High Desert Fantasy
High Desert Fantasy depicts a stunning midcentury-modern style home in Palm Springs, California. Those familiar with my work know I gravitate to painting smaller homes, less fancy than this one, houses where poor people make their homes. Yet when I saw this one, glowing under the baking sun in all its bright colours it cried out at me to be painted!
A lot of my work is about the sadness of not being able to afford a small, simple home - a home like this is so far beyond what I wish for. It’s a fantasy - what must it be like to be able to afford such a beautifully maintained and landscaped property, in such a beautiful place? What must it be like to reside inside the cool white walls of this long low desert beauty? I can only imagine.I chose to include some humanizing details (the garbage cans, the electrical wire) in the composition to remind myself and the viewer that even in fancy houses like this, it’s still just regular people living inside. The dichotomy between the stunning lines of this house and my jealousy over not being able to even imagine living somewhere like this is the painting’s heart. Every time I see it, I’m taken right back to that hot hot day in California, where I imagine the owners of this house must still be; happy in the sunshine.
