Back of House
I’ve always liked the term “back of house”. In housing, restaurants, retail and theatre, it refers to the areas at the back; that only those who are intimately familiar with the space are granted access to.
The back spaces aren’t shown to the public - in the back of buildings like this the public can see them, as I saw this one from the back of a taxi. But they don’t spend time in these back-of-house spaces; don’t use the dumpsters, spend time in the parking lot or garage. I think the backs of buildings tell a whole different story than the fronts do, and hint even more at the lives of the inhabitants (or workers.)
What is it like to live in this building above the Fortune House restaurant? What is it like to work at the restaurant and see this luxury building every time you pull up to work? What can we learn about people from the back of their spaces? What can we learn about you, from yours?
